How did you discover your talent? What got you started?
Growing up I was always involved in athletics. I initially played soccer, but over the 3 years I was involved I didn’t score a single goal! Needless to say, I quickly discovered that any sport involving a ball was not my forte. I then became involved in Swimming and Gymnastics, but as everyone grew taller in Swimming, it was time to specialize in the latter (lol!). 5’7” in all its glory, Gymnastics was perfect for me. I continued with Gymnastics for 16 years, competing nationally, as well as representing Canada internationally. After an injury that ended my career in sport, I made myself a commitment to continue being an athlete in all forms this can take. What would I consider to be my talent? Commitment to being a lifelong athlete, and encouraging others to do so as well.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A train engineer! Thomas the Tank Engine was my jam. This then evolved into aspirations to be a Dentist. Up until second year University I still wanted to do this. Little switch up in my program at UBC from Kinesiology into Business, I now work in Commercial Real Estate and Fitness. All over the map!
Who was your biggest inspiration?
My parents! They always worked hard to ensure I was able to pursue my passions.
What makes you keep innovating and pushing your skills to new heights? What’s the intrinsic driver or motivation?
My intrinsic drive comes from being in constant competition with myself. I no longer have anyone else to compete with since ending sport, so why not apply that mentality to my current endeavours?! Never settle.
So far, what has been your favourite highlight of your career? An achievement? A specific moment?
I used to be quite shy. When I was asked to audition, potentially teaching Spin at Ride Cycle Club, I said no. I was too nervous being up there - 50 people in that tiny room staring at me sounded awful. Two years later the opportunity presented itself again and I gave it a go. This turned out to be a major success! The highlight of my career so far is overcoming the fear of being in front of a group, while learning humility in the process. Laughing at yourself is something I find truly empowering.
In regards to your career, where do you want to be in 5 or 10 years?
Adding more styles of workouts to the ones I currently coach in Vancouver! While maintaining my career in Real Estate.
In terms of healthy habits, what are your thoughts on the current beverage options out there? (I.e. Energy Drinks, high sugar drinks etc)
Health-washing products that aren't actually healthy! Do your research.
How does Wize fit into your current lifestyle? And why do you choose Wize?
I try to steer clear of refined sugars! That ain’t fuel! Wize provides me with a refreshing alternative to those more common energy drinks filled with the nasty stuff.
What are the next projects coming down the pipeline?
Recently I have started my own bootcamp, BURNCAMP - a circuit style workout that combines intense cardio and strength, one of my faves for someone who is constantly on the go like myself. Trust me, if you are looking for something that is both effective and fun, I got you! City athletes where ya at?
What’s your favourite flavour of Wize tea? When do you typically drink it?
Mango Iced Tea! You can catch me crushing these at my desk, before BURNCAMP, as well as the perfect pick me up after a sweaty spin class. Oh… and maybe mixing these on a friday night to make the “WIZE-est” of all health conscious cocktails. ;)
