What’s the secret to a long, healthy life? While healthy eating and regular exercise are important, a new study suggests that we often overlook another simple but very important factor: relationships. Whether it’s romantic relationships or friendships, people who surround themselves with others tend, on average, to live longer, get better sleep, and experience better immune function. They want to help you find healthy and sustainable ways to add fitness into your everyday routine, and they take great pride in seeing their clients succeed in their goals. Their long-term goals include opening a gym, but for now they have an innovative app that allows clients to book sessions and keep in touch with trainers. Positive News tells the story of the Manguinhos gardens, situated in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This expansive urban garden is part of the Hortas Cariocas project. Launched in 2006, the project has spawned 55 gardens located in either schools or what are considered vulnerable neighborhoods, such as the one above. The food grown there is distributed within the community, providing organic food to people who may not otherwise have easy access to fresh and nutritious produce. But the people growing it have an impressive story as well—many are those who would have otherwise struggled to find work, or, as one farmer explains, without the garden “today I might be selling drugs, I might be dead, I might be in prison”. Although the Manguinhos gardens are already thought to be the biggest urban garden in the world, they’re seeking to expand it further to help even more people within the community. Growing strong, and growing together.
